一门方言,两套口音ONE DIALECT, TWO ACCENTS
Linguists split Shanghainese into an "old school" (fixed in the early 20th century, still heard from speakers over 70 and on the opera stage) and a "new school" (evolved under Mandarin's influence, spoken by most young and middle-aged locals). Mutually intelligible — but the generation gap is audible.
DIFFERENCE 1: SHARP VS ROUND INITIALS
The classic fault line. Old school keeps sharp (alveolar) and round (palatal) initials apart: 精 zin ≠ 经 jin, 酒 ziu ≠ 九 jiu, 西 si ≠ 希 xi. New school merges them all into j/q/x — exactly Mandarin's influence. Opera actors must still keep the split; most young locals can't hear it.
DIFFERENCE 2: NASALS AND PURE VOWELS
Old school keeps richer, stabler nasal codas (帮 pon); new school drops or nasalises them (≈ po). Vowels drift too: old school round and back, new school front and flat. Vocabulary shifts as well — 夜到/明朝/交关 giving way to 晚上/明天/很多.
WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU LEARN?
Pragmatic answer: learn the new school actively, understand the old school passively. New school is the currency on today's streets; old school is the key to opera, storytelling, old films and your elders. But don't call new school "inauthentic" — it is proof the dialect is alive.

Hearing the old/new split graduates your Shanghainese from "speaking" to "listening". When 小姐 comes out as siau-zia on stage, that isn't wrong — it's time. A dialect's layering is the scale of a city's memory.
听得出老派新派之别,你的沪语就从「会说」进阶到了「会听」。下次听到沪剧里「小姐」读作 siau-zia、听到外婆说「交关好白相」,你会知道那不是错,是时间。方言的层次感,正是一座城市记忆力的刻度。
